Michigan: College Month Puts Focus on Completing the 2027-28 FAFSA

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · States · GSM News

October is Michigan College Month, proclaimed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) is reminding students and families this month that the 2027-28 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opened on October 1, and College Month is a prime time to complete it.

MiLEAP said Michigan College Month is a statewide effort to raise awareness for high school seniors to complete college applications, and that many colleges and universities waive application fees during the period. Completing the FAFSA helps students and families understand the financial aid available to them and is an important step toward making a degree or skills certificate more affordable.

MiLEAP executive director Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea said every student deserves an opportunity to pursue a college education, and that completing the FAFSA helps families see what aid is available. Applications are filed through the federal student aid system, with guidance available from MiLEAP and schools.
