Ohio Governor Mike DeWine on October 13 signed Executive Order 2026-04D, allowing Ohio public and private colleges to decline to enforce the NCAA restriction on athletes from the high-school class of 2022, giving eligible athletes a fifth year of competition in 2026-27.

Under the order, an athlete must be within five years of their 19th birthday and of first college enrollment at the start of the 2026-27 academic year, must have been eligible at the end of their last season, and must not have played in a professional league.

DeWine and Lt. Governor Jim Tressel said the athletes' high-school seasons had been disrupted by the pandemic. NCAA President Charlie Baker had earlier written to object to the approach. The order applies to the 2026-27 academic year.
