Thursday, October 22, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) announced on October 19 that it has awarded $336,000 in McKinney-Vento subgrants to 11 local education agencies to support students experiencing homelessness.

The McKinney-Vento Act is the federal law safeguarding the educational rights of homeless children and youth, requiring districts to keep such students enrolled and to provide supports including transportation. RIDE said the subgrants will help districts identify students experiencing homelessness and provide the services they need to maintain educational stability.

The department said funded districts will use the money for liaison work, transportation and case support, so that students can remain in their school of origin or enroll locally even when their housing is unstable.
