South Carolina: Westinghouse to Invest About $1 Billion in New LEU+ Fuel Factory in Richland County

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · States · GSM News

The South Carolina Department of Commerce announced on October 21 that Westinghouse is expanding its Richland County operations with an approximately $1 billion investment to build a new LEU+ fuel factory.

The factory will be built alongside Westinghouse's existing Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility in Hopkins. LEU+ fuel is enriched to between 5% and 8% uranium-235, above conventional reactor fuel. The Commerce Department said it will be the first fleet-scale LEU+ factory built in the United States in more than 50 years; construction is underway and operations are expected in 2030.

Governor Henry McMaster and Commerce Secretary Harry M. Lightsey III said the project strengthens South Carolina's place in the nuclear supply chain and brings long-term jobs and investment to the area.
