South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden announced on October 3 approximately $7.2 million in federal Rural Health Transformation (RHT) funding for 25 projects aimed at strengthening emergency medical services (EMS) across the state.

The governor's office said the awards are part of the state's Enhancing Sustainable Emergency Medical Services initiative and will support EMS workforce recruitment and training, leadership development, regional collaboration, communications and dispatch improvements, technology and data integration, telemedicine and clinical quality improvement, with a focus on rural, Tribal and frontier communities.

Rhoden said that in emergencies every minute matters and the investments will help ensure South Dakotans have reliable emergency care close to home. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz praised the state's approach in the announcement.
