Wisconsin: Governor Says Prison Overhaul Will Cost About $585 Million, Finish in 2032

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers announced on October 21 that the state's prison overhaul plan will cost about 80% more than originally projected, rising to roughly $585 million, with completion now expected in late 2032.
The plan includes closing the 128-year-old Green Bay Correctional Institution, rebuilding Waupun Correctional Institution and reconfiguring other state prisons. Evers attributed the higher cost to a roughly 20-month delay in approving the plan, during which construction costs kept rising.
State Representative Benjamin Franklin questioned the governor's figures, while State Senator Jamie Wall said the plan is a public-safety issue that should not be delayed further. The corrections overhaul has been one of the state's most debated infrastructure issues in recent years.
