West Virginia: Governor Announces $2 Million Statewide Teleophthalmology Network

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · States · GSM News

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey announced in mid-October a $2,000,026 award from the West Virginia Rural Health Transformation Program (WV RHTP) to the West Virginia University Eye Institute, through the state's Connected Care Grid initiative, to establish a statewide teleophthalmology network.

The governor's office said the network will bring advanced eye screening to doctors' offices and local health centers across the state, including all 14 counties that currently lack a local eye doctor, and will set up four regional eye testing centers with advanced diagnostic tools. The project will also recruit and train eight certified technicians from rural communities.

Morrisey said eye screening can help detect systemic chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure earlier, so rural patients can receive specialist monitoring without traveling long distances.
