Trump Proclaims October 2026 as National Seafood Month

WASHINGTON — The White House on October 22 released a presidential proclamation in which President Donald J. Trump proclaimed October 2026 as National Seafood Month, calling upon all Americans to express their thanks for the American citizens who sustain this crucial industry, and to mark the month with appropriate events and ceremonies. The proclamation was signed on October 22.
According to the proclamation, the American seafood industry harvests nearly 8.5 billion pounds of food annually, sustains more than a million jobs, and fuels more than $173 billion in commerce. From the fishing ports of early America to today's seafood farms and processing plants, the industry has sustained family businesses and helped forge the spirit of America's maritime workforce. Food security is national security, the proclamation says, and the nation's fisheries are a vital pillar of American independence.
The proclamation lists the administration's fisheries actions: an executive order signed last year to restore American seafood competitiveness; the recently launched Department of Agriculture Office of Seafood; three proclamations restoring commercial fishing access to nearly 5,000 square miles in the Atlantic Ocean and to hundreds of thousands of square miles in the Pacific; the largest single-year quota increase in the history of the United States Atlantic bluefin tuna fishery; a 1,200 percent quota increase for Atlantic mackerel; revival of the West Coast salmon season, yielding the first full commercial fishery in three years; and $123.6 million in fishery disaster assistance to help communities recover from losses, strengthen shoreside infrastructure, and support job retraining.
The proclamation says the administration will continue slashing burdensome regulations so fishermen can reinvest in their fleets and expand their operations, with the goal of making the United States the strongest, most successful seafood producer in the world.
