NASA Sets ROSES-27 Solicitation Release for January 2027 with About 50 Program Elements

NASA's Science Mission Directorate has set out the timetable for its next omnibus research solicitation: Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences 2027, or ROSES-27, is intended to open by January 2027 at the latest, according to reports of the agency's announcement to the research community this week.

ROSES-27 is expected to offer roughly 50 program elements, covering astrophysics, heliophysics, Earth, lunar and planetary science, biological and physical sciences and cross-disciplinary work. That is an expansion from ROSES-2025, which offered about 35 proposal opportunities and an estimated $125 million to $150 million in total funding.

NASA said disclosing the timeline early gives universities and research institutions time to assemble teams, prepare submissions and mentor students and early-career researchers. The January target breaks from NASA's recent schedule: the agency issued ROSES-25 in July instead of its customary February window and slated ROSES-26 for July as well, while extending closing dates for program elements carrying flexible or no deadlines.

The solicitation is described as a key channel for involving researchers in the priorities of President Trump's National Space Policy and NASA's Ignition initiatives, unveiled in March, which aim to speed discovery, link science and exploration, and tap expertise across academia, industry and partner organizations, according to reports.
