Retired Chinese American Astrophysics Professor, 90, Shoved Off NYC Subway Train; NYPD Releases Suspect Images

Dr. C.G. Wang, a 90-year-old retired astrophysics professor, was shoved out of a New York City subway train onto the platform by a stranger on October 6, suffering multiple broken bones and requiring a hip replacement. On October 21, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) released surveillance images of the suspect, who remains at large, and asked the public for help identifying him, according to ABC7 New York and the NYPD.
The attack happened at about 1 p.m. on October 6 at the Lexington Avenue and East 53rd Street station in Manhattan. Wang, who is visually impaired, had ridden the E train to that stop thousands of times over roughly a decade and knew exactly which door opens closest to the escalator. That afternoon the train was fairly empty, but a man was standing in front of that door. Wang said he simply told the man, “I need to exit here.” The man stepped aside — and when the doors opened, Wang was pushed so hard that he flew out of the train.
“I landed on my hip first. Then my shoulder, next. Then my head, next. Boom, boom, boom,” Wang recalled. His head was not injured, but the fall broke several bones and he needed a hip replacement. Wang said he had never been hospitalized in his life; until the attack he still commuted to an office to do research and write.
His son, Juin Wang, said police told the family that his father had not fallen but had been deliberately pushed. “Who does this? Who would shove a 90-year-old, frail, visually impaired man?” he asked.
In its wanted notice, the NYPD described the suspect as a man between 40 and 50 years old with a medium build, wearing a black jacket and a black baseball cap at the time, and asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. The family said its priority is helping Wang recover and regain the independence he had before the attack, and that it hopes the person responsible will be held accountable so no other passenger goes through the same thing.
