Independent Committee Submits Report on Wang Fuk Court Fire to Hong Kong Chief Executive

HONG KONG — The independent committee investigating the Wang Fuk Court fire submitted its report to Chief Executive John Lee on October 22. During the inquiry, the committee heard testimony from 80 witnesses, gathered more than one million documents and held 30 hearings in a comprehensive examination of the fire's causes and accountability.
Lee said the government would announce comprehensive reform and accountability arrangements, and would seek legal advice before publication. He had earlier appointed the independent committee to investigate the incident thoroughly and directed government departments to cooperate.
The Wang Fuk Court fire is among Hong Kong's most closely watched public safety incidents in recent years. How the committee's findings, and the follow-up accountability and reform measures, are implemented is being closely followed across the community.
