Hungary Marks 70th Anniversary of the 1956 Uprising With Ceremonies in Budapest

BUDAPEST — Hungary marks the 70th anniversary of the 1956 uprising on October 23, with dozens of commemorative events planned in Budapest and ceremonies at numerous other sites across the country. It is the largest such commemoration in Prime Minister Péter Magyar's nearly six months in office.
In the early afternoon, parliament will hold a special ceremony featuring a speech by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. About two hours later, Magyar is due to address the public at Kossuth Square in front of parliament. Foreign guests including Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Moldovan President Maia Sandu have announced their attendance.
The revolution began on October 23, 1956, when some 200,000 people gathered in Budapest to demand change; Soviet forces crushed the uprising on November 4. Reporting puts the death toll above 2,500, and about 200,000 Hungarians fled into exile. The events remain a central part of Hungary's national memory.
