Trucker Protests Ease in Southern Italy as Government Approves Emergency Support Decree

Friday, October 23, 2026 · World News · GSM News

ROME — Protests by truck drivers in southern Italy eased on October 22, with roadblocks lifted in Sicily and action suspended in Calabria, according to Reuters and Italian news agency LaPresse. Drivers had blocked roads over high fuel costs and demanded greater government support.

The cabinet approved an emergency decree supporting road haulage, agriculture and fisheries: diesel tax credits for March to August will be paid in full in advance, with a further €106 million added for September and October, on top of €434 million already allocated. Outstanding subsidies for maritime transport will begin to be paid from November.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed the measures in a video message, and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini signed an agreement with industry associations confirming implementation arrangements. The associations said they would decide on further action depending on how the measures are carried out.
