Aung San Suu Kyi Speaks With Son Kim Aris for First Time in Over Five Years

NAYPYIDAW — Aung San Suu Kyi spoke with her younger son, Kim Aris, for about 20 minutes on October 22, her first direct conversation with family since she was detained in February 2021, more than five and a half years ago, Reuters and AFP reported. Aris took the call at Myanmar's embassy in London.
Suu Kyi, 81, is held under house arrest in Naypyidaw and is serving sentences totalling 18 years. Aris said his mother's voice sounded reasonably healthy but that she has tendonitis in her right hand; she asked for regular private contact, independent medical care and unconditional release.
Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy won the 2020 election before the military seized power, detained her and secured convictions on multiple charges. Whether the call signals any change in her situation remains to be seen.
