New Zealand PM Christopher Luxon Unveils Seniors Policy Covering Housing, Helpline and Protection From Financial Abuse

Friday, October 23, 2026 · World News · GSM News

WELLINGTON — New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon unveiled his National Party's seniors policy at Pacific Lakes on October 22, covering more affordable housing for older people, relaxed rules for granny flats and small dwellings, and a new 0800 seniors helpline.

The package also proposes protection against financial abuse of older people, and continued employer KiwiSaver contributions for employees who keep working after 65. Luxon said couples' superannuation had already risen by NZ$180 a fortnight and that the government would keep improving living costs and housing conditions for seniors.

New Zealand is in election season, with parties rolling out policies aimed at seniors, families and the cost of living. Older voters are a significant constituency, and their housing, pension and healthcare concerns are receiving close attention from all parties.
