Schedule

1:00-1:40 p.m. Da Xi Tea Gathering

1:50-2:50 p.m. Da Xi Chinese Classics Sharing and Reading Session (Session 45): final session of the I Ching series, "The Wisdom of the Eight Trigrams"

3:00-5:30 p.m. Chinese Classic Film Salon (Session 40): screening of "One-Armed Swordsman" (1967)

The day opens with the Da Xi Tea Gathering, billed as "a cup of tea, and a chance to meet a group of interesting people." Da Xi Hui is dedicated to film, culture, tea gatherings and exchange, and the Weekend Culture Day is programmed around those themes: meeting friends over tea, honoring the classics, and sensing life through light and shadow.

The second program is Session 45 of the Da Xi Chinese Classics Sharing and Reading Session, and the final session of its I Ching series, on the theme "The Wisdom of the Eight Trigrams." Guest speaker Julia will share the basic meanings of the eight trigrams in the I Ching and the life wisdom they carry, bringing this stage of study to a close.

The closing program is Session 40 of the Chinese Classic Film Salon, screening "One-Armed Swordsman" (1967), directed by Chang Cheh and starring Jimmy Wang Yu, Pan Yingzi and Chiao Chiao. A classic of Hong Kong's new-school wuxia cinema, the film tells of a swordsman who loses his right arm and rises again through adversity, exploring loyalty, love and life's choices amid feuds and grudges; Chang Cheh's vivid heroic imagery and distinctive masculine aesthetic opened a new style for Hong Kong wuxia film. After the screening, film producer and director Fan Xin will lead a sharing and discussion session.

The film salon's October series, "Chinese-Language Cinema of the 1960s-1970s: A Four-Region Survey," screened the mainland film "Two Stage Sisters" (1964, directed by Xie Jin) on October 10; this week's Hong Kong entry, "One-Armed Swordsman" (1967, directed by Chang Cheh), on October 24; Taiwan's "Dragon Inn" (1967, directed by King Hu) on October 31; and the overseas Chinese film "The Arch" (1970, directed by Tang Shu Shuen) on November 6.
