Da Xi Movie Night in San Marino Screens 'The 400 Blows' Tonight: Truffaut's New Wave Classic With a Talk by Zhou Tiedong
In San Marino, a city in Los Angeles County, California, the Chinese cultural space Da Xi Hui (DA XI HUI) hosts its Da Xi Movie Night tonight (Friday, October 23), screening the French New Wave classic "The 400 Blows" (1959). Veteran filmmaker and columnist Zhou Tiedong will lead a post-screening talk. A light meal and tea will be served at the event. The screening was originally scheduled for last week and was postponed to this Friday due to weather.

"The 400 Blows" (Les Quatre Cents Coups, 1959) is the first feature film by French director François Truffaut and one of the defining works of the French New Wave. With delicate, truthful camerawork, it tells the story of the young Antoine's growing up, loneliness and rebellion: a boy no one understands, a family lacking warmth, and a school full of discipline, longing for freedom yet meeting misunderstanding and constraint again and again. The poster's line for this screening reads, "Freedom is the first step of growing up."
Zhou Tiedong will give the post-screening talk, discussing with the audience why "The 400 Blows" became a classic of world cinema history, and how the French New Wave broke with traditional film narrative, using a free camera language to re-explore the complexities of youth, family, education and human nature.
Da Xi Movie Night is Da Xi Hui's film screening program, combining film, a shared meal and exchange; a light meal and tea are provided at this screening. In its announcement, the organizer writes that film is not merely entertainment but a reflection on life. The Da Xi GROUP official website will keep updating Da Xi's film projects and activities, including film screenings, a comedy creation camp, Chinese classics sharing and reading sessions, tea culture activities, and drama, film and SI creation courses.
