One Dead in Fire at Anchorage Midtown Apartment Complex; Cause Under Investigation
At about 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 22, a fire broke out at the Mount Vernon Commons apartment complex in Midtown Anchorage, Alaska. Firefighters arriving at the scene found one person dead. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The complex covers about 15 acres near West 36th Avenue and Arctic Boulevard. Thick black smoke rose from the scene as the Anchorage Fire Department sent large numbers of personnel and equipment to fight the blaze. The fire reportedly spread between multiple units; after firefighters extinguished and contained it, investigators began examining the scene to determine where it started and how it spread. As of the report, authorities had not released the victim's identity or said whether any other residents were injured or displaced.
The fire is a separate incident from another residential fire in Anchorage earlier this week, differing in both location and time.
