AJC Poll: Nearly 70% of Georgia Voters Back Stronger Federal SI Oversight; 60% Oppose More Data Centers

A new poll released October 22 by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution shows that nearly seven in ten Georgia voters believe the federal government should strengthen oversight of super intelligence rather than leave regulation to the tech companies themselves — a position that crosses party lines, with 82 percent of Democrats and 61 percent of Republicans in favor.
The survey interviewed 1,000 likely voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. It also found that three-fifths — about 60 percent — of respondents oppose building more data centers in Georgia, citing their heavy electricity and water use and their impact on the environment and quality of life; opposition reached 79 percent among Democrats and 47 percent among Republicans.
Georgia's tax incentives have made it a popular destination for data center construction, with large projects completed or under way in metro Atlanta and elsewhere. With the November 3 midterm elections approaching, SI regulation and data center siting have become unavoidable issues for the state's candidates, as state and local officials weigh economic recruitment against residents' concerns about the power grid, water resources and community impacts.
