Massachusetts Awards $14 Million to Help State University Students Graduate, Reaching at Least 8,000 Students at 9 Universities

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey announced on October 22 that the state will award $14 million through the State University SUCCESS program (SU SUCCESS) to help state university students complete their degrees and graduate, expected to reach at least 8,000 students statewide this year.

About $13.3 million goes directly to nine state universities for student support programs, with the remainder funding statewide implementation and an independent evaluation. Allocations are based on factors including enrollment and the number of Pell Grant-eligible students: Bridgewater State University receives the largest award at $3.023 million, followed by Salem State University at $2.05 million, Worcester State University at $1.713 million, Westfield State University at $1.533 million, Framingham State University at $1.316 million, Fitchburg State University at $1.298 million, Massachusetts College of Art and Design at $932,000, Massachusetts Maritime Academy at $714,000, and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at $684,000.

The SUCCESS program serves students at risk of dropping out, offering one-on-one academic advising, tutoring, peer mentoring, career and scholarship guidance, and help connecting to basic needs such as housing, transportation and childcare; it is expected to reach about a quarter of identified at-risk students at each school. Healey said the state has made historic investments in college affordability and must now "make sure students have the support they need to finish — no student should give up a degree because of an unexpected expense or a lack of help." The state Department of Higher Education is working with the State University Council of Presidents and Georgia State University's National Institute for Student Success to provide technical assistance, and the firm ICF will independently evaluate the program's results.
