New York Commits $200 Million to Upgrade Water Infrastructure Statewide, Covering Drinking Water and Sewer Projects

Friday, October 23, 2026 · States · GSM News

On October 22, 2026, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the state will invest $200 million to help communities across the state advance critical drinking water, stormwater and wastewater projects, while easing the cost burden on local ratepayers.

According to the governor's office news release issued the same day, the funding is aimed at municipalities that need to renew aging water systems, with a focus on drinking water safety, stormwater management and sewer system modernization. The state said aging water infrastructure is a long-standing problem for many communities, and that state investment can help localities start projects without passing large cost increases on to residents.

The water funding was one of several quality-of-life and infrastructure measures the Hochul administration announced on October 22, which also included an emergency department renovation at a Binghamton hospital and the milestone of more than one million potholes repaired on state roads. Communities will apply and advance specific projects under procedures the state will publish; the funds will support planned drinking water, stormwater and sewer work.
