Abbott Campaigns in San Angelo on Affordability: Promises Typical Families More Than $4,000 a Year, with Property Tax Reform at the Center

Texas Governor Greg Abbott held a campaign rally in San Angelo on Thursday, October 22, stumping for re-election ahead of the November 3 election before a crowd of roughly 150 to 200 supporters.
Running on an "affordability" agenda, Abbott said his cost-cutting plan would save the typical Texas family more than $4,000 a year on average, and laid out three property tax reform proposals: any property tax increase would require a two-thirds supermajority; the annual appraisal growth cap would drop from 10 percent to 3 percent; and public education would be funded more by the state rather than local property taxes. Under his plan, he said, the typical homeowner would pay more than $3,000 less in property taxes each year.
Abbott also attacked the voting record of Democratic gubernatorial nominee Gina Hinojosa, calling her "more liberal than Senate nominee James Talarico." Hinojosa, a state representative, is Abbott's Democratic opponent in the re-election race. Supporters at the rally also pressed Abbott on the environmental impact of data center construction; he responded that he has paused new data center permits and set standards that development not strain the power grid, raise electricity bills or intrude on communities. San Angelo's mayor, Tom Thompson, spoke before Abbott, thanking the state for funds secured for the area after the July 2025 floods. Early voting in Texas is under way and runs through October 30.
