Iowa Man Sentenced to 63 Months for Stealing a Gun While Under a Domestic Violence Protection Order

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa announced that Chad Willman, 50, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was sentenced on October 23 by Chief U.S. District Judge C.J. Williams to 63 months (more than five years) in federal prison for possessing a firearm while subject to an order of protection, followed by three years of supervised release. Willman had pleaded guilty on March 13, 2026.
Evidence at sentencing showed that in January 2025, Willman was subject to an order of protection entered in Linn County District Court prohibiting him from harassing, stalking and threatening an intimate partner. The order followed an assault conviction in which Willman had forced his then-girlfriend at gunpoint to travel with him to the Wikiup Hill Learning Center, where he took her cell phones and shot them, destroying them; community members present called police and he was arrested.
Unable to lawfully purchase a gun, Willman burglarized a Cedar Rapids home and stole a Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol from the homeowner. On April 1, 2025, police arresting him at his apartment saw the gun mounted on a magnetic plate on his kitchen wall; its magazine had been modified to hold more than 16 rounds.
The case is part of the Justice Department's Operation Take Back America initiative. It was investigated by the Hiawatha Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa C. Williams under case number 25-CR-60. There is no parole in the federal system, and Willman is being held by the U.S. Marshals pending transport to a federal prison.
