Registered Sex Offender Joseph Grunwald Sentenced to 30 Years in Federal Prison for Coercing Two Minors and Receiving Child Pornography

Joseph Grunwald, 34, of Brooklyn, New York, was sentenced on October 22 by U.S. District Judge Nina R. Morrison in the Eastern District of New York to 30 years in federal prison for coercing and enticing a minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct and for receiving child pornography. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York announced the sentence on October 23. Grunwald pleaded guilty in August 2026 to a three-count superseding information, and he was a registered sex offender in New York State when he committed the federal crimes.

According to court filings, between March and December 2023 Grunwald communicated over the internet and through social media with two children, soliciting sexually explicit videos and images from both. He first contacted a 14-year-old boy, identified as John Doe-1, on the messaging app Telegram, confirmed the victim was a minor, and solicited a sexually explicit picture from him. The boy later learned that Grunwald had sent the picture, without his knowledge, to a group chat. In June 2023 Grunwald began threatening the victim: on June 26 he wrote, 'You're still in trouble and remember what I said yesterday. Those boys told me something about you,' and the next day, after chasing the boy through his synagogue, he wrote, 'I am going to call your mother. I have her cell phone number. Good luck. I'm going to tell her everything.'

Grunwald also solicited sexually explicit pictures from a second minor boy, John Doe-2, exchanging thousands of messages with him on Instagram; he confirmed the boy was a minor but falsely claimed he was 18. Law enforcement seized multiple electronic devices from Grunwald containing additional child pornography depicting other minors.

Prosecutors noted two prior convictions for sexually abusing minors: in 2019 Grunwald was convicted of sexually abusing a 7-year-old girl in a synagogue and sentenced to 10 years' probation, and while that case was still pending he sexually abused a 13-year-old boy in exchange for a cell phone and the use of his debit card, pleading guilty to misdemeanor sexual abuse and receiving three years' probation. 'The defendant has demonstrated that he poses a grave danger to children. Today's sentence was necessary to protect the community from this recidivist menace for decades,' said U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella, Jr., who added that the prior state sentences of probation had failed to deter him. FBI Assistant Director in Charge James C. Barnacle, Jr. said the sentence ensures Grunwald will spend the next three decades unable to victimize additional children.

The prosecution is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The case was handled by the office's General Crimes Section, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Vincent Chiappini in charge of the prosecution, under docket No. 24-CR-19 (NRM).
