Habitat for Humanity Global Survey: Three in Four Have Cut Back on Essentials to Afford Housing

Friday, October 23, 2026 · Nonprofit · GSM News

Atlanta — Habitat for Humanity International has released a global research report, "Home at What Cost?", based on nationally representative surveys of 30,000 people across 22 countries. Three in four respondents (75%) said they had cut back on at least one expense in the past year to afford housing costs: 33% spent less on food, 32% dipped into savings or emergency funds, and 13% delayed or avoided medical care.

Nearly half of respondents globally (48%) said one unexpected problem could threaten their ability to stay housed, 40% said they accept some level of housing risk because safer options are out of reach, and 56% said the housing system in their country is broken or does not work. The pressure falls hardest on people in informal living arrangements (89%), lower-income groups (85%) and younger generations — Gen Z and Millennials (81%).

Founded in Georgia in 1976, Habitat for Humanity is one of the world's largest nonprofit housing organizations, partnering with communities, volunteers and homebuyers to build and improve homes in more than 70 countries.
