Tonight: Wembanyama Looks to Bounce Back as the Spurs Host the Rockets in Austin
The San Antonio Spurs host the Houston Rockets in Austin on Friday night, with star Victor Wembanyama looking to bounce back from a rough opener: he shot 1-for-13 as the Spurs fell 116-104 to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Friday's game is part of the Spurs' Austin residency, about 90 miles from San Antonio.
Wembanyama still finished the opener with 12 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks, but his offense never got going. "I need to go back to playing the basketball I like," he said afterward. "This is not the sport I like right here. I've got no reason to be hesitant, no reason to not be myself. For me, it's as simple as that. I'm good when I have fun." San Antonio's backcourt produced in the opener: Stephon Castle scored 24 points, Dylan Harper 18 and D'Aaron Fox 14.
Houston arrives after a 128-110 home win over the Dallas Mavericks in its opener on Wednesday, when Kevin Durant and Jabari Smith Jr. scored 30 points each and Alperen Sengun added 23 points and 10 rebounds. After Friday, the Spurs stay in Texas to visit Dallas on Saturday for a back-to-back.
