Cyndi Lauper Auctions Four Decades of Stage Memorabilia: More Than 300 Lots at Bonhams in New York, Headlined by the 'True Colors' Newspaper Skirt
NEW YORK — Singer Cyndi Lauper has sent stage costumes and personal memorabilia spanning more than four decades of her career to Bonhams for a two-part sale titled "Cyndi Lauper: Suitcase of Memories." The live auction was held on October 22 at Bonhams' flagship galleries at 111 West 57th Street in New York, and the online sale runs through October 23, with more than 300 lots on offer and some pieces starting at just $200.
Highlights include the handmade newspaper skirt she wore on the cover of the True Colors album and in its music video, created with Laura Wills, owner of the vintage shop Screaming Mimi's; the leopard-print pajamas from the "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" video; the lunchbox seen in "Time After Time"; the red plaid dress she wore to the first-ever MTV Video Music Awards in 1984; and pieces by designers including Vivienne Westwood, along with awards and furniture from her New York City apartment.
The sale is timed to the 40th anniversary of her 1986 album True Colors. Lauper told Vogue she thought the newspaper skirt had been lost and "couldn't believe it" when she found it at the bottom of a trunk; according to People, she cried when she came across the skirt while going through her archive, and it has since been rebuilt and placed on a new dress form for display. Anna Hicks, Bonhams' Head of Private & Iconic Collections in the U.S., said in the sale announcement: "Few artists have shaped popular culture with the originality and impact of Cyndi Lauper." Lauper was closely involved in planning the sales, and the collection was exhibited publicly at Bonhams ahead of the auction.
Lauper, 73, debuted in 1983 with the album She's So Unusual and has sold more than 50 million records worldwide; she is one of the few artists to have won Grammy, Tony and Emmy awards. As previously reported by GSM, she has announced a 10-show Las Vegas residency for 2027.
