São Paulo Holds First Chinese-Brazilian Chongyang Walk With 500 Participants

São Paulo held its first Chinese-Brazilian Chongyang Walk on October 18 at Praça Padre Bento in the Brás district, a 3-kilometre route with 500 places, 150 of them reserved for Chinese participants. The event featured dragon and lion dances, cultural performances and a Chinese food and culture market, and each participant donated one kilogram of non-perishable food.
The walk was organized by São Paulo city councilor Kenji Ito together with the Brazilian Yang, Lin and Wang clan associations, with support from the Chinese Consulate-General in São Paulo and the Chinese Association of Brazil.
Chongyang, the Double Ninth Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival associated with climbing heights and honouring the elderly. Organizers said they hoped the walk would introduce the tradition to Brazilian society and strengthen exchanges between Chinese and Brazilian residents.
