Venezuela Sees First Large Nationwide Protests in Nearly Two Years as Demonstrators Demand Free Elections

Friday, October 23, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Reuters reported on October 23 that several Venezuelan cities saw large protests on Thursday, October 22 — the first nationwide demonstrations of their scale in nearly two years — with protesters demanding free elections. The protests took place in the capital, Caracas, as well as Valencia, Maracay, San Cristóbal and Maracaibo.

According to the report, Venezuela is governed by the interim administration of Delcy Rodriguez after U.S. forces captured Maduro in January of this year. Exiled opposition leader Machado, last year's Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has demanded elections by July 2027.

The ruling party also organized pro-government marches the same day. This report is based on Reuters coverage.
