Follow-Up: At Fort Myers Rally, Trump Announces $250 Million Elder-Care Nurse Plan as Cuba Remarks Detailed
President Donald Trump held a rally in Fort Myers, Florida, on October 23 and spoke for about 90 minutes, according to Reuters. He announced a plan to spend $250 million to hire at least 5,000 new nurses in elder care facilities across America, an announcement aimed at the senior voters who make up a large share of Florida's electorate.
Cuba was another focus. "We'll take care of Cuba on our way back from Iran, and then we're going to send Marco Rubio in to finish up the deal," Trump said, adding that a U.S. naval vessel would stop about 50 yards off the Cuban coast. Trump won about 68 percent of the Cuban American vote in Florida in the 2024 election. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who handles much of the Cuba portfolio, posted on X on Friday urging those disappointed by Cuba's government "to create the change you desire through a discrete partnership with the CIA."
The United States has maintained an embargo on Cuba for more than 60 years, and an oil blockade imposed this year has deepened fuel shortages and blackouts on the island. Cuba's foreign minister told the UN General Assembly last month that Cuba would always be open to dialogue with Washington. Trump predicted last month that the two countries would reach an agreement and said he did not think military action would be necessary.
On Iran, Trump told the rally the United States may carry out another military operation, calling it another "little Epic Fury," the U.S. military's name for its war against Iran. Earlier on Friday he said Washington could end the war quickly but questioned whether it should finish it off or let it wither.
The rally was intended to boost Florida Representative Byron Donalds, the Republican running for governor against Democrat David Jolly. Control of Congress is at stake in the November 3 midterm elections, and a spike in oil prices has put Republicans on the defensive.
