Bitcoin Falls Below $82,000: More Than $430 Million Liquidated in 24 Hours as Spot Bitcoin ETFs Post a $635 Million Outflow

NEW YORK — Bitcoin extended its slide on October 23, briefly falling below $82,000, as traders blamed spillover from a sharp selloff in artificial-intelligence and technology stocks: the Nasdaq Composite closed down 2.6% on Thursday, led by tech names. Crypto data provider CoinDesk put total liquidations over the past 24 hours at about $431 million, including some $173 million in squeezed short positions; in the preceding 12 hours, about $210 million in long positions were wiped out, and a roughly $11.8 million position on Binance was force-closed near $83,500, the largest single liquidation of the period. The Block put liquidations over a comparable window at about $440.9 million.
Bitcoin fell on Thursday from an intraday high near $84,800 to a low around $81,000. According to crypto.news, it was trading at $81,449.88 at press time, down 0.97% over 24 hours. Fund flows also weakened: U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $635 million in net outflows on Thursday, October 22, their largest single-day outflow since late September, with BlackRock's IBIT losing $254 million, Fidelity's FBTC $217 million and ARKB $109 million.
Analysts say the linkage between tech stocks and crypto assets has tightened recently, with bitcoin tending to fall in step when the SI trade cools; what comes next depends on whether U.S. tech shares stabilize and whether ETF flows reverse. (GSM, based on CoinDesk, The Block and crypto.news)
