Two Israeli Soldiers Killed in Hebron Checkpoint Shooting: Army Seals Off Hebron After Netanyahu Narrows Closure Order Within Hours

HEBRON — Two Palestinian gunmen opened fire on Israeli soldiers at a military checkpoint in the West Bank city of Hebron early on October 23, killing two soldiers and lightly wounding three others, before being shot dead themselves, CNN reported.
The Israel Defense Forces have imposed a total siege on Hebron, according to CNN. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initially ordered a full closure of the entire West Bank starting Friday, then said hours later that he was considering limiting the closure zone to Hebron and the neighboring town of Halhul. By Friday afternoon, forced demolitions had begun in Hebron's Farsh al-Hawa neighborhood, with residents told they had five minutes to leave.
The IDF said the gunmen's vehicle was loaded with large quantities of ammunition, and Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said the military had thwarted what could have been a much deadlier attack. Hamas praised the shooting but did not claim responsibility. The attack comes days before Israel's October 27 election, the country's first since the October 7, 2023 attacks.
