One Killed, Four Wounded in Drive-By Shooting Near Paris; Anti-Terror Prosecutors Take Over Probe Into Possible Racist Motive

PARIS — A drive-by shooting in the Paris suburbs on the morning of October 23 left one person dead and four seriously wounded, with France's national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office taking over the investigation to examine a possible racist motive. According to CNN, at about 10:30 a.m. local time on Friday, a gunman drove through three locations in Trappes and La Verrière, firing an automatic weapon at pedestrians.
The victim was a 26-year-old man of African descent, shot dead at a playground; among the four wounded was a 12-year-old girl who, BFM TV reported, was hit eight times. The suspect, identified as Kévin T., 39, who has a criminal record, was arrested; police found a submachine gun and tear-gas canisters in his car. The anti-terrorism prosecutor's office said the probe focuses on "murder linked to a terrorist organization" with aggravating circumstances "based on the victim's race, ethnicity or religion." President Emmanuel Macron posted condolences on X.
The attack comes as France deploys about 70,000 security personnel ahead of a new round of cost-ofliving protests on Saturday, with venues including the Louvre set to close. (GSM, from CNN)
