Nigeria's Ebola Patient Identified as Swiss Diplomat's Wife Who Had Traveled to Uganda

Friday, October 23, 2026 · World · GSM News

ABUJA — Switzerland's foreign ministry confirmed to Reuters that Nigeria's first Ebola case in more than a decade is the 42-year-old Ugandan-born wife of a Swiss diplomat posted in Abuja. She was diagnosed on October 20.

Her husband is in isolation with no symptoms, and 25 embassy employees need no health quarantine, according to the reports. The epidemiological investigation indicates she was infected during travel in Uganda about two weeks earlier: she was in Uganda from September 16 to October 3 and fell ill four days after returning to Nigeria.

Switzerland said she had not visited the Democratic Republic of Congo, contradicting Ugandan officials' account; the Africa CDC said there was "no verified information yet." Nigerian authorities have traced 44 contacts. Laboratory tests identified the Bundibugyo strain.
