North Korea's Internet Hit by DDoS Cyberattack, Monitoring Firm Kentik Says; Attacker Unknown

Friday, October 23, 2026 · Technology · GSM News

SEOUL — The intermittent nationwide internet outages in North Korea this week were caused by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, U.S. network monitoring firm Kentik said. Reuters reported the analysis on October 23.

Kentik said attack traffic came from Vietnam, the Philippines and elsewhere, arriving in multiple waves over 32 hours starting around 11:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday. More than 40 .kp-domain websites were affected, including the foreign ministry and the Korean Central News Agency.

"This was definitely a DDoS attack," said Doug Madory, Kentik's director of internet analysis, though he did not identify the attacker. Notably, North Korea also suffered a hours-long nationwide outage after the 2014 Sony Pictures hacking episode. (GSM, from Reuters)
