Olympic Surfer Alan Cleland Jr. Under Investigation in Tahiti Over Alleged Sexual Assault of Minor; WSL Suspends Him

TAHITI — Jacques Louvier, the prosecutor at the Papeete Court of Appeal in Tahiti, confirmed to USA Today Sports that prosecutors are investigating allegations of group sexual assault involving an underage female athlete at a private party after the August Teahupo'o event. The World Surf League (WSL) provisionally suspended the athlete on October 12, citing allegations "of an extremely serious nature." Cross-reporting identified him as 24-year-old Mexican surfer Alan Cleland Jr., who represented Mexico at the 2024 Olympics.
Sponsors Quiksilver and Monster Energy have taken down his athlete pages. Neither the WSL nor Cleland responded to requests for comment.
It must be stressed that these remain allegations, the investigation is ongoing, and any conclusions must await the judicial process. (GSM, from USA Today)
