Mob of About 50 Beats Foreign National to Death in Durban Amid Anti-Migrant Protests

Friday, October 23, 2026 · World · GSM News

DURBAN — A foreign national was beaten to death by a mob of about 50 people in central Durban on the morning of October 22. Police have opened a murder investigation; no arrests have been made.

According to Reuters, two people broke away from a march on Dr Pixley kaSeme Street on Thursday morning and approached a man on the roadside; about 50 others then joined the beating, and the man — in his late 30s to early 40s — died at the scene. Police did not release the victim's nationality, and the motive is unknown.

The backdrop is the months-long "March and March" anti-migrant protest movement: Durban saw two days of rioting two weeks ago, after which soldiers were deployed to help keep order. Nigeria, Mozambique and Malawi say their citizens have been killed in similar attacks; tens of thousands of African migrants have left South Africa this year over threats of violence.
