Wisconsin Gov. Evers Grants 206 More Pardons, Bringing His Term Total to a Record 2,443

MADISON, Wis. — The Office of Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers announced on October 23 that the governor has granted pardons to 206 more people, bringing the total number of pardons he has issued in office to 2,443 — the most by any governor in state history.

Evers reinstated the state's pardon process after taking office in 2019; his predecessor had granted no pardons in eight years. Under the eligibility criteria in the governor's Executive Order #30, an applicant must have committed a Wisconsin felony, completed their entire sentence at least five years ago, and have no pending criminal charges; people required to register as sex offenders are ineligible. A pardon restores the rights to serve on a jury, run for public office and hold certain professional licenses, but it does not expunge the conviction from the person's record.

Evers' second and final term ends in January 2027. His office previously announced that applications to be considered for a pardon under his administration had to be submitted by October 5. Announcing that deadline in September, Evers said that restoring the pardon process and granting more than 2,000 second chances to people across the state was among the most important work of his time as governor.
