New Mexico: Governor's Race Enters Final Stretch: Deb Haaland Faces Gregg Hull With Affordability and Crime in Focus

Friday, October 23, 2026 · States · GSM News

In New Mexico, the race for governor has entered its final stretch. According to Associated Press reporting published October 22, Democratic nominee Deb Haaland, a former U.S. Secretary of the Interior, faces Republican Gregg Hull, a former mayor of Rio Rancho, in a contest shaped by the cost of living, crime, education and the use of revenue from the state's substantial oil production. The election is on November 3.

Haaland, a citizen of Laguna Pueblo, served in Congress before joining the Cabinet as interior secretary. If elected, she would become the first Native American woman to lead a U.S. state. She proposes expanding existing tax credits and spending more on safety-net programs to help families make ends meet. Hull promises to cut taxes, which he said will fight poverty by allowing people to keep more money in their pockets, and says New Mexico is primed for a shift.

New Mexico persistently ranks near the bottom nationally on poverty, crime and public education. Democrats hold all the top state offices and have controlled the Legislature nearly continuously for almost a century, and the governor's race will test voters' views of the status quo.
