New York: Governor Announces Largest Long Island DEC Land Acquisition in History: Nearly 750 Acres of Shoreline and Forest Protected

Friday, October 23, 2026 · States · GSM News

In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul announced on October 22 that the Department of Environmental Conservation has completed the largest land acquisition in Long Island history: nearly 750 acres in Shoreham, including almost a mile of unspoiled shoreline along Long Island Sound, hundreds of acres of forest and extensive wetlands.

The property lies within the Central Pine Barrens Core Preservation Area and contains Split Rock, a glacial boulder complex that held spiritual significance to several Native American tribes. Kevin McDonald, senior policy advisor for The Nature Conservancy in New York, said the preservation protects clean drinking water and wildlife habitat. John Turner, co-founder of the Long Island Pine Barrens Society, called the acquisition a great gift to all Long Islanders.

The purchase is part of the Governor's 30x30 initiative to protect 30 percent of New York's lands and waters by 2030. Managed by DEC, the property will feature expanded recreational opportunities, including beach access and accessible multi-use trails.
