South Dakota: Governor Activates National Guard Engineering Company for Southern Border Deployment

Friday, October 23, 2026 · States · GSM News

In South Dakota, Governor Larry Rhoden announced on October 22 that he has activated the 155th Engineering Company of the South Dakota National Guard for deployment to the southern border. The Governor's Office published the decision on its news page the same day, without releasing details on the deployment's location, size or duration.

The 155th is an engineering unit whose typical missions include construction, facility work and logistics engineering support. The same day, Rhoden's office also opened applications for its winter and spring internship program, as routine state business continued alongside the deployment.

South Dakota has sent National Guard personnel to the southern border several times in recent years. The Governor's Office said further information will be released as departure arrangements are finalized, and that family support contacts and in-state emergency duty coverage are not affected by the deployment.
