Wyoming: Governor Campaigns Against Proposition 1: Majority Home Property Tax Exemption Would Strain Local Services

In Wyoming, Proposition 1 on the November 3 ballot would implement a 50 percent property tax exemption on primary residences, excluding the land they sit on. Governor Mark Gordon has campaigned against the measure and set out his position in an opinion piece, arguing the change would be too expensive for local governments to continue providing existing services and that targeted cuts would be better.
Many local officials across the state have raised similar concerns, arguing the exemption would hit funding for public schools, rural firefighters and community colleges. In the Wyoming PBS gubernatorial debate, Republican nominee Eric Barlow was the only candidate for governor to come out against the proposition, emphasizing other property tax relief measures the Legislature has enacted over the past five years and the consequences of cutting funding for local services.
Gordon has endorsed Barlow to succeed him as governor. Barlow faces Democrat Ken Casner and Constitution Party candidate Rebecca Bextel on November 3, with property taxes among the central issues of the campaign.
