Hurricane Vance Holds at 110 Mph Off Mexico's Pacific Coast as Hurricane Center Warns of Life-Threatening Surf

Hurricane Vance held its strength off Mexico's Pacific coast early on October 24, with maximum sustained winds near 110 mph (175 kph), a Category 2 hurricane, according to Advisory Number 12 issued by the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC). The center said some fluctuations in intensity were possible during the day on Saturday, followed by a gradual weakening trend beginning Saturday night and continuing through Sunday. At 3 a.m. CDT (0900 UTC) on October 24, the center of Vance was located near latitude 12.4 North and longitude 102.8 West, about 590 kilometers (365 miles) south-southwest of Acapulco, Mexico, and about 750 kilometers (465 miles) south-southeast of Manzanillo, the advisory said. Vance was moving toward the north-northwest near 11 kph (7 mph), and that motion was expected to continue through the weekend. Its minimum central pressure was 965 millibars. Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 45 kilometers (30 miles) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extended up to 240 kilometers (150 miles). No coastal watches or warnings were in effect, and the NHC said interests along the southwestern coast of Mexico should monitor Vance's progress.
On hazards affecting land, the NHC said swells generated by Vance would affect portions of the coast of southern and southwestern Mexico this weekend and continue into next week, and that those swells were likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
Vance formed in the eastern Pacific on October 21 and strengthened rapidly this week. According to The Associated Press, it reached Category 2 strength on Friday and neared major-hurricane strength. The AP noted that it has been an intense Pacific hurricane season, with storms spawning in succession near Hawaii and Mexico; if Vance were to reach Category 3, it would be the season's seventh major hurricane in a row, following Nolo, Odalys, Polo, Rachel, Simon and Trudy. The NHC expects Vance to weaken gradually as it moves, and whether it makes landfall on Mexico's west coast will depend on its track in the coming days.
