Trump Says His Operation Will Spend Over $400 Million on the Midterms: His Super PAC Held $424 Million at the End of August

President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on October 20 that he has spent, or will be spending, more than $400 million by Election Day to help Republican candidates in this year's midterm elections, including more than $300 million already spent on advertising, direct and indirect voter contact, rallies, rally arenas, telerallies, get-out-the-vote programs and election integrity efforts.
"I have spent, or will be spending, over 400 Million Dollars by Election Day," Trump wrote. "It is my Great Honor to do so on behalf of the Republican Party, which has done so much to bring our Country back from the Edge of Oblivion." He called the November 3 midterms the most important in the country's history. According to USA Today, the money appears to refer to MAGA Inc., a super PAC operated by donors aligned with the president; Trump did not specify the source or breakdown of the funds.
Trump disclosed the figure ahead of the October 20 deadline for the committee to file its report with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), covering fundraising and spending through the end of September. Through the end of August, MAGA Inc. reported having $424 million in the bank.
According to USA Today, the financial activity of MAGA Inc. and other outside super PACs has given Republican Senate candidates a significant financial advantage in the midterms, even though the individual campaigns of Democratic Senate candidates have raised more money than their Republican rivals. Elon Musk, a Trump supporter, contributed $158 million to a PAC supporting Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in his campaign for the U.S. Senate; according to The New York Times, Musk has put more than $276 million in total into his super PAC and other groups backing Republicans. On the Democratic side, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on October 20 that he would spend about $80 million in September and October to boost Democratic campaigns.
The midterm elections will be held on November 3, with all 435 House seats and 33 Senate seats on the ballot. According to USA Today, with two weeks to go, Democrats are strong favorites to win control of the House and are increasingly bullish about their chances of flipping the Senate.
