Taylor Swift's Debut Album Turns 20: New Documentary Out Today Revisits Her Nashville Beginnings

Twenty years ago today, on October 24, 2006, a 16-year-old Taylor Swift released her self-titled debut album, entering country music with curly blond hair and a notebook full of songs about teenage love and heartbreak. Two decades later, her Nashville beginnings are the subject of a new documentary, Taylor Swift Finding Her Place in This World: Celebrating 20 Years of Her Debut Album, produced by The Tennessean and released on October 24.
According to USA Today, the documentary was reported over three years by Bryan West, the newspaper group's first dedicated Taylor Swift reporter. It features interviews with Swift's first manager, Rick Barker; early songwriting collaborators Liz Rose and Robert Ellis Orrall; Washington Post journalist Emily Yahr, whose book Taylor Swift: The Debut Years is out alongside the anniversary; and Harvard Business Review editor Kevin Evers. Swift's team did not respond to requests for comment.
The film revisits a difficult start: Swift held a development deal with RCA Records, but executives doubted a teenage girl writing her own experiences could succeed in a country industry dominated by adult men. After leaving RCA, she performed at Nashville's Bluebird Cafe and caught the attention of Scott Borchetta, who was launching Big Machine Records and promised to back her own songs. Her sessions with Liz Rose produced debut staples including Tim McGraw, Teardrops on My Guitar and Mary's Song (Oh My My My), while manager Rick Barker took her to radio stations and unconventional venues across the country under an early philosophy he sums up as shake a million hands, make a million fans.
The debut album went on to earn an eight-times platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America, representing 8 million album-equivalent units in the United States. In the 20 years since, Swift has released 12 studio albums and set touring records with the Eras Tour. Anticipation continues for a re-recorded Taylor Swift (Taylor's Version), but Swift has announced no plans or date, and the documentary offers no news on that front.
