Harris Returns to the Campaign Trail for Democrats in Five States, With 2028 in View

Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party's unsuccessful 2024 presidential nominee, has returned to the campaign trail this week to help Democrats in some of the tightest races of the midterm elections, Reuters reported on October 24. Harris had made relatively few public appearances this year. Her tour covers Georgia, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire and Wisconsin, as Democrats try to break the Republican hold on Congress in the November 3 midterms.
The tour kicked off on Tuesday in Las Vegas, where Harris spoke to Culinary Workers Union members alongside Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, the Democratic candidate for governor, saying Ford would be the first Black governor west of the Mississippi if elected. "We got a serious fight in front of us," she said. "We are witnessing pure brutality come out of what is undoubtedly the most corrupt, callous and incompetent presidential administration."
The next day, Harris campaigned at Columbus High School in Columbus, Mississippi, for U.S. Senate candidate Scott Colom, leading chants of "Mississippi matters!" Colom is seeking to become the first Democratic U.S. senator elected in Mississippi since 1982, and polls show an unusually tight race against Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith. Harris shared advice she gives young people she mentors: never let someone else's limited ability to see your capacity be a limitation on your ambition.
Harris is not broadly popular nationally. A Reuters/Ipsos poll in June showed 39% of Americans viewed her favorably, with stark partisan splits: 82% of Democrats, 7% of Republicans and 33% of independents. "At the end of a campaign, you bring out your heavy hitters," said Elaine Kamarck, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. "That's what's going on here with her, and frankly with Trump."
Her return has renewed questions about whether she will run for the White House a third time in 2028. In her memoir "107 Days," Harris called Joe Biden's decision to seek reelection "reckless," and this month she criticized Israel's conduct in Gaza. Asked on a video podcast this month whether she would run again, she laughed and said she had not decided yet, adding: "2028 don't matter if we don't do 2026 right."
