World Development Information Day on October 24: Established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to Put Information to Work for Development

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · Promotion · GSM News

October 24 is World Development Information Day, a United Nations observance. The UN's official observances calendar lists the 2026 observance on October 24, the same date as United Nations Day.

The day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 through resolution 3038 (XXVII), to draw the attention of world public opinion to development problems and the need to strengthen international cooperation to solve them. The Assembly chose October 24 to coincide with United Nations Day and with the anniversary of the adoption, in 1970, of the International Development Strategy for the Second United Nations Development Decade.

Under its founding resolution, the observance centers on improving the dissemination of information about development: mobilizing governments, media and the public — young people in particular — to better understand development issues, and using information and communication technologies to advance economic and social progress.

World Development Information Day is not a public holiday. UN bodies and member states typically mark it with meetings, seminars and public information campaigns.
