Universal Insurance Holdings (NYSE: UVE), a property and casualty insurer based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, reported third-quarter 2026 results on October 22: net income rose 31.8% year over year to $52.5 million, with adjusted diluted earnings per share of $1.93, up from $1.36 a year earlier. GAAP diluted EPS was $1.80, and the net combined ratio improved to 91.0%.

Direct premiums written rose 2.7% to $608.9 million, as an 18.5% increase outside Florida partly offset a 3.3% decline in its home state. Total revenues grew 9.6% to $439.3 million, and net premiums earned climbed 12.1% to $403.2 million. The net loss ratio fell 5.6 points to 64.6%, while the ceded premium ratio dropped to 27.6% from 32.7% under a new reinsurance program that took effect on June 1. Policies in force grew 8%, and book value per share rose 32.4% year over year to $23.37.

Chief Executive Officer Stephen J. Donaghy said the company delivered a 32.7% annualized return on average common equity in the quarter, driven by solid underwriting and revenue performance. "Our net loss ratio continues to improve and new business trends are solid," he said.

The company also disclosed that after the quarter ended, Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin in the western Florida Panhandle as a Category 2 hurricane before quickly weakening. Donaghy said claims teams deployed field adjusters to affected communities to expedite inspections and payments, that claims activity so far has been less significant than initially anticipated, and that the priority remains helping customers recover and return to normal as quickly as possible.
