Only 23% of German Voters Expect Merz's Coalition to Last Until 2029, YouGov Poll Finds

Sunday, October 25, 2026 · World · GSM News

A YouGov poll for the dpa news agency, published on Sunday, October 25, found German voters deeply pessimistic about how long Chancellor Friedrich Merz's governing coalition will last: of 2,202 eligible voters surveyed, just 23% believe the government of the Union (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democrats will survive until the 2029 federal election.

Thirteen percent of respondents expect the coalition to collapse this year and 44% expect it to end within two years, while 20% gave no answer. Majorities inside both camps doubt the government's longevity, with 53% of Union supporters and 46% of SPD supporters predicting a premature breakup.

The poll follows heavy September state-election losses for both coalition parties and strong gains by the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which have intensified disputes over reforms and party strategy. Merz has said his patience with the SPD is exhausted.
