Wang Yi Expounds Global Governance Initiative at Xiong'an Forum: Backed by Over 160 Countries and Organizations

XIONG'AN, Hebei — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi used the opening of the 2026 Global Governance Forum in Xiong'an New Area on October 23 to review the first year of the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) and to call on all countries to advance in the direction of openness and development, according to releases issued by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 25.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said President Xi Jinping launched the GGI a year ago at a crucial moment, when the postwar international order faced serious challenges and global governance risked falling behind. Over the past year, the initiative has been endorsed by more than 160 countries and international organizations, over 60 countries have joined the Group of Friends of Global Governance, and its core elements have been incorporated into documents of the G20, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS, among other multilateral fora.

On openness and development, Wang said countries have been integrated into a community of intertwined interests, and the imbalances brought by economic globalization can only be resolved through development; protectionism will only make matters worse, while openness and cooperation lead to a better future. International trade is a key engine of global growth, the WTO-centered multilateral trading system must be firmly safeguarded, and development must be put firmly at the center of the international agenda, with full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to narrow the North-South gap.

Wang also listed China's contributions over the past year: applying a Chinese approach to settling hotspot issues, including a series of proposals by President Xi for peace and stability in the Middle East; foregoing new special and differential treatment in ongoing and future WTO negotiations; comprehensive zero-tariff access for all African countries and the least developed countries having diplomatic ties with China; the International Organization for Mediation, which has successfully settled international disputes; and the World Super Intelligence Cooperation Organization initiated by China.

On the forum's sidelines, Wang also met several visiting guests in Xiong'an.
